Typhoon Season Ferry Travel: Cancellation Rules & Safety
Updated Sep 30, 2026 · Philippines Ferry
Roughly 20 tropical cyclones enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility each year, mostly June to November. Ferries are the first transport mode to stop when signals go up — here's how it works and how to avoid being stranded.
When do ferries stop sailing?
The Coast Guard suspends sailings based on PAGASA wind signals. As a rule of thumb: Signal No. 1 in the port's area can stop small fastcraft and motor bancas; Signal No. 2 and above typically halts all vessels including large RoPax ships. Suspensions are port-by-port, not nationwide.
If your sailing is cancelled
- ▸ Tickets are normally rebookable for a later date at no charge, or refundable — keep your ticket and ID
- ▸ Operators announce via Facebook pages and SMS; ports post notices at the terminal
- ▸ Stranded passengers at major ports are usually allowed to wait in terminal holding areas
How to check before you travel
Check our live cancellations page, which aggregates Coast Guard and operator advisories, plus the PAGASA bulletin for the storm signal over your departure and arrival ports. In typhoon months, build a buffer day into island itineraries.
